When Does a Water Pump Need to Be Replaced?
In many vehicles, the water pump is driven by either the timing belt or the serpentine belt. When the belt driving the pump fails, the pump can no longer circulate coolant—even if the pump itself is still in good condition.
- If the timing belt drives the water pump, engine operation usually stops immediately, preventing overheating but causing a breakdown
- If the serpentine belt drives the pump, warning signs may appear before total failure

(Some newer hybrid and electric vehicles use electrically driven coolant pumps, which operate differently.)
